This is my glossary about the things we learned in the first bimester of chemistry.
Adhesion
Noun
The action or process of adhering to a surface or object.
Example: Adhesion is one of the properties of water
pt_br: Adesão
Alchemy
Noun
The medieval forerunner of chemistry, based on the supposed transformation of matter. It was concerned particularly with attempts to convert base metals into gold or to find a universal elixir.
Example: She manages, by some extraordinary alchemy, to turn the most ordinary of ingredients into the most delicious of dishes.
pt_br: Alquimia
Asteroid
Noun
A small rocky body orbiting the sun. Large numbers of these, ranging in size from nearly 600 miles (1,000 km) across (Ceres) to dust particles, are found (as the asteroid belt) especially between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, though some have more eccentric orbits, and a few pass close to the earth or enter the atmosphere as meteors.
Example: Scientists are hoping an asteroid will clue them in about early life on earth.
pt_br: Asteróide
Astrochemistry
Noun
The study of the chemical substances and species occurring in stars and interstellar space.
Example: Astrochemistry is a very important branch of science.
pt_br: Astroquímica
Boiling Point
Noun
The temperature at which a liquid boils and turns to vapor.
Example: The boiling point of water is at 100 degrees.
pt_br: Ponto de ebulição
Chemical Change
Noun
A usually irreversible chemical reaction involving the rearrangement of the atoms of one or more substances and a change in their chemical properties or composition, resulting in the formation of at least one new substance.
Example: The formation of rust on iron is a chemical change.
pt_br: Mudança química
Chemical Property
Noun
A property or characteristic of a substance that is observed during a reaction in which the chemical composition or identity of the substance is changed.
Example: Combustibility is an important chemical property to consider when choosing building materials.
pt_br: Propriedade química
Chemical Reaction
Noun
A process that involves rearrangement of the molecular or ionic structure of a substance, as opposed to a change in physical form or a nuclear reaction.
Example: When you mix vinegar and baking soda occurs a chemical reaction.
pt_br: Reação química
Cohesion
Noun
The sticking together of particles of the same substance.
Example: Cohesion is one of water's physical properties.
pt_br: Coesão
Density
Noun
The degree of compactness of a substance.
Example: Mercury is the fluid with the highest density.
pt_br: Densidade
Lustre
Noun
The way light interacts with the surface of a crystal, rock, or mineral.
Example: Diamonds have a high lustre.
pt_br: Brilho
Melting Point
Noun
The temperature at which a given solid will melt.
Example: Ice's melting point is at 0 degrees.
pt_br: Ponto de fusão
Meteor
Noun
A small body of matter from outer space that enters the earth's atmosphere, becoming incandescent as a result of friction and appearing as a streak of light.
Example: A meteor falled on Brazil some days ago.
pt_br: Meteoro
Physical Property
Noun
A physical property is any property that is measurable, whose value describes a state of a physical system.
Example: One of the most common physical properties is color.
pt_br: Propriedade física
Solubility
Noun
The ability to be dissolved, especially in water.
Example: Chocolate in powder has a great solubility in milk.
